Command & Conquer: Renegade Interview

Action Vault: Can you explain the game's C&C mode? What is the objective of each team, and how do players purchase characters and various equipment?

Cliff Hicks: Command & Conquer mode is a team-based multiplayer game in which two sides, the GDI and the Brotherhood of Nod attempt to infiltrate and destroy each other's bases, just like in a C&C RTS game. In C&C mode, each team is trying to place an "endgame" beacon in the opponent's base; either the Nod Nuke Strike beacon or the GDI Ion Cannon beacon. You have to place the beacon at specific points for the "endgame" result, but even if you just drop it near a building, it's still going to do a ton of damage.

At the beginning, all players start at a "grunt" level with a base level arsenal. The base economy is all automated; harvesters gather and refine Tiberium and generate credits. Additional credits are gained by killing other enemies in the field. When enough credits are amassed, players can purchase higher ranks, granting them access to more powerful weapons and higher health and armor levels.

Credits can also be spent on buying vehicles from a Vehicle Factory. So players can drive Humm-Vees, dune buggies, APCs, mobile rocket launchers, mobile artillery and tanks. There's a cooperative element in just about all of these vehicles; two players can occupy a Nod buggy with one driving and the other firing the machine gun. Some of the larger vehicles, like the APC, can carry up to six players, which makes it a great vehicle to use for a base assault.

Players also have to defend and repair their buildings and their vehicles. Harvester hunting is a common tactic right now, as it can help keep the opposing team from gaining too much money, so it's just as important to defend and repair your harvester as it is to hunt the enemy's.
